Position Summary:
The Library/Media Assistant is primarily responsible for providing support to the certified Librarian/Media Specialist with specific responsibilities for maintaining the library and media collections at school sites; identifying age appropriate resources for students and teachers utilizing library and media resources; selecting appropriate items in support of classroom instructions; and performing clerical functions related to collection, processing, circulation, maintenance, and inventory of library materials and textbooks.
Supervision:
The Library/Media Assistant works with an elevated level of independence and professional discretion under the general supervision of a designated school district librian. The Library/Media Assistant’s work is governed, controlled, and evaluated by acceptable professional practice, school and district policies and regulations, provisions of Taos Municipal Schools district policies and procedures, direction of the supervisor, and performance standards and expectations as set forth in the collective bargaining agreement.
Duties and Responsibilities listed may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Assists in ordering supplies and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability as needed
- Assist in processing student ID’s, passwords, notices of missing, damaged or overdue library books and/or textbooks, media, and materials for the purpose of providing and/or maintaining access to library resources and securing reimbursement for losses.
- Assists teachers, students, and administrators for the purpose of identifying resource materials for using classroom and/or class assignments.
- Duplicates media and instructional material for the purpose of maintaining an appropriate inventory of internal distribution.
- Evaluates books, media, and/or periodicals for retention within collection for the purpose of ensuring the availability of books and library materials.
- Maintains materials inventory and equipment for the purpose of providing an up-to-date reference and ensuring the availability of materials and equipment when required.
- Monitors the computer use of students, volunteers, and student activities for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment conceive to learning.
- Operates a variety of media equipment, computer equipment, and systems for the purpose of providing library media services to students and staff.
- Performs circulation activities for the purpose of controlling the use, location, and availability of items in the collection.
- Prepares manual and electronic documents and reports for the purpose of providing documentation and information to others.
- Processes library books, periodicals, software, and related media materials for the purpose of providing students and staff with required materials.
- Responds to inquiries of students, staff, and parents for the purpose of providing information and/or direction as required.
- Required to follow board policies and procedures and stay abreast of updates and changes.
- Performs all other duties assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree preferred
- High school diploma/GED and ability pass Para-pro test
- Valid Educational Assistant License issued by NM PED
- Demonstrated knowledge for subjects/levels being taught.
- Ability to effectively communicate with parents. Students. And staff verbally and in writing.

- While performing the duties of this job, the teacher may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during their duties. The teacher may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students.
- The employee may be required to travel in school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
