Position Summary:
The Native American Liaison is responsible for performing the duties of a tutor for the Indian Education Program in the areas of Language Arts/Reading and Mathematics
Supervision and Controls over the Work:
The Native American Liaison works with an elevated level of independence and professional discretion under the direction of the assigned administrator. The Native American Liaison supervises Native American Ed. Students and Native American Tutors. Work is governed, controlled, and evaluated by acceptable professional practice, school and district policies and regulations, provisions of Taos Municipal School district policies and procedures, direction of the supervisor, and performance standards and expectations as set forth by the collective bargaining agreement.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Works under the direct supervision of the Building Principal, supervising teacher/tutor, and indirect supervision of the Federal Programs Coordinator and Indian Education Program Manager.
- Attends Indian Education Committee meetings. Tutors will receive comp time for attendance of these meetings. Comp time will be given by Indian Education Program Manager and approved by Federal Programs Coordinator
- Provides a monthly report to the Indian Education Committee.
- Familiarizes themselves with the goals and objectives of the Indian Education Program.
- Works closely with Taos Pueblo to identify areas of need as well as connect with resources for students.
- Identifies Native American students for remediation and provide tutoring in Math and Language Arts using state mandated tests, grades, parent/teacher referrals, and any other referrals.
- Evaluates targeted students monthly progress in targeted areas.
- Connects students and parents with needed support in academics, attendance, community services, behavior, and health.
- Establishes and maintain individual education plans, four year/records within tutor’s assigned area.
- Maintains all record-keeping pertinent documents required for Indian Education Programs and performs other duties as assigned:
- Collects 506 forms/Indian Student Eligibility Certification form from all Native American students.
- Maintains grade records, state assessment scores, deficiency reports, absenteeism, and truancy reports.
- Periodic update reports in the Control Book to the Indian Education Program Manager.
- Makes referrals to the Indian Education Program Manager and the Federal Programs Coordinator for Indian students with social problems for special help, to request and schedule special parental conferences, etc.
- Challenges Indian students to excellence by assisting the Federal Programs Coordinator and the Indian Education Program Manager in scheduling educational field trips, character counts awards, etc.
- Assures an open line of communication between the Indian Education Program and the classroom to ensure continuity.
- Disseminates program information to the proper entities on a timely basis.
- Attends meetings relevant to the Indian Education Program.
- Prepares agendas, sign-in sheets, schedules, and all other pertinent reports for IEC meetings.
- Performs duties as assigned by the Federal Program Coordinator and/or Special Education Coordinator
- Serves as an advocate for Native American students, parents, and addresses concerns in a positive manner.
- Assists in providing cultural awareness to the school system and Native American students.
- Reviews instructional plans with his/her supervising teacher/tutor.
- Collaborates with all staff members and demonstrates professionalism in attitude.
- Uses sound judgment and show proper initiative in the Indian Education Program.
- Performs any other programmatic duties as assigned by the Federal Programs Coordinator and/or Indian Education Program Manager.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualification:
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree
- Valid teaching certification issued by NM PED
- Demonstrated knowledge for subjects/levels being taught.
- Ability to effectively communicate with parents, students, and staff verbally and in writing.
