Position Summary:
Serves as a certified mechanic. Responsible for performing duties in the maintenance and repair of mobile equipment to include vehicles, buses, heavy equipment, and special purpose equipment.
Supervision and Controls over the Work:
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Transportation. Work is performed independently and in conformance with local city, county, state, and federal codes and standards of the profession. Work is reviewed for timeliness, completeness, safety guidelines, and established priorities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Diagnose complex mechanical problems and determine repair work needed. Such diagnoses included knowledge and use of specialized testing and diagnostic equipment.
- Sets up and operates specialized power equipment to recondition engine, transmission, and related equipment as well as for such vehicle components as brakes, batteries, alternators, starters, etc.
- Conducts complete engine and vehicle tune-up using computerized and mechanical equipment.
- Maintains a change in vehicle fluids and filter systems including proper disposal of such materials.
- Replaces and rebuilds brakes and hydraulic systems and components, repairs damaged frames, performs general body work to include painting, repairs, replaces differentials, drive shafts, front end and steering mechanisms.
- Repairs and/or replaces vehicle electrical components and troubleshoots and repairs electrical system.
- Performs required local, state, and federal vehicle inspection and safety checks.
- Maintains equipment and tools.
- Conducts road tests and assures effectiveness of safety of repair.
- Works in closely with school bus drivers, and other transportation staff.
- Assist in cleaning and organizing the maintenance shop “Bus Barn”.
- Serves as substitute School Bus Monitor is emergency situations.
- Drives school buses to dealerships for repairs and works closely with service department personnel.
- Properly maintains service records for all district vehicles.
- Required to follow Board Policies and Procedures and stay abreast of updates and changes.
- Performs other duties assigned by administrator and/or designee.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent.
- Two years work experience in general vehicle/mobile equipment mechanic trades.
- Must poses Certification in Mechanics with training in both diesel and gas engines.
- Must possess a valid New Mexico driver’s license and a safe driving record and be able to operate district owned vehicles. Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement, or ability to obtain one soon after employment begins.
- Must possess First Aid/CPR Certification or be willing to become certified
- Ability to recognize and take measures to eliminate safety risk on equipment used to transport students and employees.
- Experience in maintenance and repair of large and small school buses including gasoline and diesel.
- Experience in welding.
- Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction; sound judgement and decision-making capabilities are essential.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulation related to assigned trade/craft.
- This position will be subject to criminal background check and random drug testing.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, crawl, sit, move about, hear, speak. May be required to work in restricted spaces, in a prone position, and under difficult lighting and access conditions. Noise level may be high when operating power equipment. Employee may be exposed to outside weather conditions especially in emergency repair situations.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. and in excess of 50 lbs. using appropriate support equipment.
